Networking

IP Networks are a ubiquitous fabric of many systems today, from corporate offices to air traffic control. This ubiquity has driven tremendous benefit in reliability, scale, and cost but also presents commercial integrators and end users with a myriad of possibilities when it comes to designing, purchasing and configuring their networks.

For DigiLinX Audio/Video systems there are a few basic rules to follow when it comes to the IP Network:
  • Wiring Topology
Your network should be wired in a star configuration, meaning that if you have multiple switches on the network, there should be one main switch that each additional switch is connected to. If you are planning on designing a network with a different topology and wish to use DigiLinX please contact your NetStreams sales representative or NetStreams authorized systems integrator for assistance
  • Distances
Networks can be designed to work over very large distances, however, if you're using CAT-5(e) cabling the maximum length of a cable run is 324 feet. If you require a longer run you can use fiber. There are 2 types of fiber commonly used, multi-mode and single-mode, these have differing characteristics. The maximum distance you can run a fiber connection is over 10 kilometers.
  • Switches
All switches are not created equal. In order to deliver the audio/video quality, synchronization, and scale that is possible with DigiLinX, NetStreams requires that the switches used be either Layer 2 or Layer 3 managed switches with a complete IGMP implementation. Examples of these switches include NetStreams SW1024 Gigabit managed switch, Cisco's Catalyst 3500 series, and Dell's 6200 series switches. If you have any questions on switch selection please contact your NetStreams sales representative or NetStreams authorized systems integrator.
  • Configuration
Switch configuration is something that should be done by a certified installer. NetStreams provides pre-configured switches for smaller installations and configuration assistance for larger installations. For many IT organizations a certified Cisco technician should be able to configure the switches for use with NetStreams products.
